Ultrasound is the energy of waves vibrating at frequencies (this is the number of vibrations per second) greater than 20,000 cycles per second, this is beyond the range of human hearing. If the vibrational frequency is too high, we can't hear it - this is ultrasound. Sound waves with frequencies above the audible range are called ultrasonic; those with frequencies less than those of audible waves are called subsonic.
Sound is our experience of the propagation of pressure wave through some physical elastic medium. Usually the medium is air, but a liquid works well too. The pressure waves are generated from some type of mechanical disturbance. Sound is a transfer of power. Mechanical energy is being converted to a wave form that radiates energy away from the disturbance. Mechanical vibrations become vibrating pressure waves, transferring energy to the medium and to objects that the wave contacts.
The velocity of sound is not constant; it varies in different media and in the same medium at different temperatures. Sound travels more slowly in gases than in liquids, and more slowly in liquids than in solids. Sound waves can be reflected, refracted (or bent), and absorbed as light waves can be.
Higher frequencies have a shorter wavelength. A smaller size allows them to reflect from objects more readily and to give greater information about those objects. Extremely high frequencies are difficult to generate and to measure. Scientists have used frequencies up to the 10 gigahertz range.
